The “New Stadiums” panel, moderated by Professor Peter Carfagna, will focus on the new stadiums that have been built recently, the difficulties teams face in financing stadiums, the use of public monies, and other issues associated with the development and leasing of sports venues.

Mr. Carfagna counsels clients in the areas of litigation, government relations and complex business transactions. He also serves as a counselor to executives and board members on a wide range of issues. He served as chief legal officer/general counsel of IMG for over 10 years, during which time he led IMG’s 20-plus attorney worldwide legal department. He also practiced for 15 years at Jones Day, most recently as a litigation partner. Mr. Carfagna began his tenure with Calfee in 2005.
Mr. Carfagna will teach Sports and the Law: Introduction – Examining the Legal History and Evolution of in the Fall Term 2008. He will teach Sports Law: Representing the Professional Athlete and the seminar Sports and the Law: Representing Advanced Contract Drafting in the Spring Term 2009.

Marc Edelman teaches and writes in the areas of property, sports law, and antitrust. He is regularly cited about how the Sherman Act applies to professional sports leagues.
Professor Edelman is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and a cum laude graduate of Michigan Law School, where he earned an honorary Scribes Membership for best student note.
For four years, Professor Edelman practiced antitrust and sports litigation in New York, NY with the law firms Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom LLP and Dewey Ballantine LLP. He is currently affiliated with Institute for Information Law & Policy at New York Law School and serves as a regular guest contributor at Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal. He is also founder of a fantasy-sports dispute resolution business.
Derek Jackson

Derek Jackson enters his sixth season with the Marlins. Jackson joined the Club on November 17, 2003 as General Counsel and was promoted to Vice President and General Counsel on November 1, 2008. His responsibilities include drafting all business and baseball related contracts, overseeing any litigation involving the Club, and providing general legal support for the Club’s broadcast, sponsorship, sales and marketing departments. Jackson also handles the Club’s salary arbitration cases, many of its stadium-related matters and all other daily legal matters.
Jackson previously worked for Major League Baseball in the Office of the Commissioner as Counsel, Labor Relations, where he began his baseball career in September 1999. In the Commissioner’s Office in New York, Jackson served as counsel to the 30 Major League Clubs, handling issues arising under the collective bargaining agreement and individual player contracts and providing extensive support on Clubs’ Salary Arbitration cases. Jackson also provided general legal advice for the Office of the Commissioner on various employment and labor law matters.

Andrew Lee is the Principal of ALL Counsel & Consulting, a firm offering legal counseling and business consulting services to clients in the sports, arts, entertainment, and technology industries, including the New York Jets and the New Meadowlands Stadium Company.
Prior to founding the firm, Andrew served as General Counsel to the New York Jets for four years (including the 2005 through 2008 NFL Seasons), serving as a member of the Club’s senior executive management team and overseeing all of the Club’s legal affairs and HR initiatives, including the development of and corporate relocation to the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, NJ, the legal aspects of the New Meadowlands Stadium and the prior West Side Stadium initiative, as well as the Club’s leasehold interests at Giants Stadium, employment law and benefits issues and policies, litigation and dispute resolution, corporate and lobbying compliance, NFL legal and HR issues, negotiations, drafting and reviewing sponsorship, vendor and other contracts, managing outside counsel and providing legal guidance to club management.
Andrew was a senior litigator at Proskauer Rose LLP’s until 2005, working in various fields including sports, advertising and media buying, fine arts, music recording, music publishing, motion picture, television, internet and new media, pharmaceutical distribution, health care and real estate. Andrew also served as a law clerk to The Honorable Reynaldo G. Garza in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit during the 1997-98 term.
Andrew has spoken on various panels around the country on legal issues relating to the business of sports. Andrew also serves as a Director of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing affordable legal services to artists in the New York area.
Lee received his Juris Doctor from Fordham University School of Law in 1997, where he graduated cum laude, with honors including membership in the Order of the Coif. At Fordham, Lee served as the Writing & Research Editor of the International Law Journal and also founded and created the journal’s website, ILJ Online. Lee earned his Bachelor of Arts in Justice from American University in 1993. Lee currently resides in Manhattan with his wife, Kelly, and their two daughters, Nina and Emma.
